The Expanding Medium: The Future of Computer Art

I enjoyed reading this essay above all the others we had to read. Herbert's view on how computer art is becoming a "pathway to the future of expression" is so truthful if people actually thought about it. Our creativeness of developing a roll of film with out own hands has turned into taking the photograph digitally and transforming it to how you want it to look on photoshop. Our hands are essentially becoming useless art tools. Nowadays there is always an easier, faster choice of creating art, or expressing it, just by clicking on one of the many Adobe applications at the bottom or side of your screen, instead of picking up a pencil, charcoal, or paint and creating what you see in your head with the gentle movement and strokes of your hands and imagination.
I was also very interested in one of the last paragraphs when he talks about literature being basically one of the oldest, untouched forms of art that digital life hasn't taken over yet. But, it will only be a matter of time when literature will be created using Adobe. It's already begun basically if you think about it. Kindles and Ipads allow you to buy books (literature) to read and I'm sure there's an app for writing your own literature.

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction Walter Benjamin

Reading this, my first reaction honestly was 'this is super long'. Each section has interesting views on art revolutions during these ages when technology, and how each interferes directly with each other. I agree with the statement "One of the foremost tasks of art has always been the creation of a demand which could be fully satisfied only later. The history of every art form shows critical epochs in which a certain art form aspires to effects which could be fully obtained only with a changed technical standard, that is to say, in a new art form."
After taking so many art history classes in college this statement makes so much sense when you're studying one era of art and the art forms taking place, then transition into another era of art with art forms that have developed from past art forms.

The Medium is the Message

To be honest, after reading this for the first time, I was confused a little with all the information I had just taken in. After reading it the second time, skimming back through, I caught a little more information. It's interesting to hear someone's perspective on mediums and going so in depth with how everything we know is basically a medium in some way. The way we experience and what we experience in our lives means something different to each one of us about the same experience.

Analog vs. Digital

I found these two pictures, the top obviously a drawing and the bottom an actual photograph. I think that there's more life in the photographs, and they mean more to the person who took them rather than getting a drawing. A drawing won't show the details of a person that you have a memory of.

Rhizome

Same with my last post, I was interested in this because of the distortion of a human face. I like this because it's not just a normal picture, it's hand drawn which gives it an illustration feel in my opinion.

What is Digital Art?_1/25/12

While researching digital art, I came across this website that is full of artist doing digital painting. Their work is so realistic and interesting that you have to wonder HOW DO THEY DO IT?! This image really caught my eye because I like unique images like this especially made with the human body. Putting the human body in a different perspective.
